II- MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Department of English Modern Letters is to train English Language and Literature teachers for secondary and high schools. The department is in charge of students specializing in ‘Modern English Letters’ generally, but also offers the English component of the courses for Bilingual studies done by the students of the Department of Bilingual Letters. The department equally ensures the teaching of General English to Level One students of the other departments.
Profile of Students
The Bambili campus receives English Modern Letters and Bilingual students for the second cycle (postgraduate course) and, for the first cycle, (undergraduate course), and Bilingual students from the Francophone sub-system of education, that is, those who have the Baccalauréat. Anglophone bilingual candidates with the G.C.E. ‘A’ level go to the main campus in Yaoundé. Students taking the General English course are the Level One students from all the other departments.
The Courses
The language component of the programmes comprises courses in several aspects of linguistics (e.g. phonology, syntax) and in several branches of the discipline (e.g. sociolinguistics, applied linguistics), as well as courses geared towards the improvement of students’ proficiency in English. The literature component includes courses in English, African, American and Commonwealth literature, and obviously in Cameroonian literature (written and oral). The professional component comprises courses and practical work on the teaching of English as a second and foreign language, and of literature.
